Spatializing sexual and gender-based violence, gendered mobilities, and the built environment

This scoping review explores the opportunities for applying feminist spatial participatory action research (PAR) to understand gendered mobilities, with a particular focus on sexual and gender-based violence and the built environment. Building on over a decade of research in sport for development and peace, the study reflects on how research can respond to the lived realities of communities, rather than fitting neatly into predefined sectors.

The review highlights the potential of combining spatial and GIS approaches with feminist and participatory methodologies to examine the intersecting crises shaping people’s experiences of mobility, sport, climate, and urban life. It emphasizes how these methods can illuminate structural inequalities, inform community-centered interventions, and expand understandings of justice, safety, and inclusion in urban and sporting spaces.
