Areli Carreón is a founder member of Bicitekas A.C. that promotes bicycle use as a clean air transportation solution in Mexico City, since 1998. She coordinated the National campaign Hazla de tos por aire limpio in 2011, movilizing cycling groups to achieve more astringent national regulation for air pollutants. Bicitekas is part of the Observatorio ciudadano por la calidad del aire, Citizens’ Air Quality Observatory in the Metropolitan area of Mexico City. She is member of Mamás y papás por el Clima from Mexico, that brings together moms and dads in action against climate change. Proud mom of Patrick and Scott.
She was the first Bicycle Mayor of Mexico City from 2017 to 2023, an honorary position created by BYCS in the Netherlands to create global synergies to achieve that half the trips made in cities by 2030 can be done on a bicycle. She has been named one of the 21 heroes of transport in 2021 by the TUMI initiative and she is member of the all women coordination team of the Coalición Movilidad Segura that has achieved the Constitutional recognition of the Right to Safe, inclusive, sustainable mobility in México, as well as the approval of the first Mexican Law on Mobility and Road Safety. The Safe Mobility Coalition was awarded with the Prince Michael Award for Road Safety in 2022.
