E-Mobility as a Driver for Change – Towards a Gender Transformative and Just Transition to Electric Mobility

This publication and campaign by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) explores how the global shift to electric mobility can become more inclusive and gender-transformative. It highlights the importance of ensuring that women are not left behind in the transition to low-emission transport systems.

The initiative brings together reports, data, and country case studies to examine women’s roles as users, workers, and decision-makers in the e-mobility sector. It identifies key barriers, including limited access to jobs, skills, and leadership opportunities, as well as structural inequalities that risk being replicated in the transition.

Findings emphasize that e-mobility offers new opportunities for employment, entrepreneurship, and participation across the value chain, but only if supported by gender-responsive policies and investments. The initiative supports a just transition that delivers social, economic, and environmental benefits for all.
