🏙️ Who are our cities really designed for?
👣 What happens when we reimagine walkable cities through the lens of #care, #vulnerability, and #motherhood?
📚I am delighted to share my latest paper, “Reimagining Walkable Cities: Exploring the Experience of Mothers of Premature Babies”, published in Town Planning Review. Link in the first comment 👇
The article explores an often-overlooked perspective in urban planning: the everyday mobility experiences of first-time mothers caring for premature babies after #neonatal care (around 1 in 7 babies born in the UK each year require neonatal care)
Based on interdisciplinary research conducted in inner #London, the paper examines how urban environments are experienced emotionally, socially, and sensorially. From navigating buses with oxygen tanks and non-folding prams, to searching for safe and welcoming #publicspaces while caring for medically vulnerable babies. 👶🚌🌳
The research argues that truly sustainable and inclusive cities must move beyond efficiency and infrastructure alone, and pay greater attention to lived, embodied, and sensory experiences.
💬 Do you research motherhood, care, mobility, or inclusive cities? Please get in touch. I would love to connect and continue the conversation.
